Federal agents close Mid-South business for selling synthetic drugs

(WMC-TV) - The Smoke Shop on Sycamore View was closed Wednesday amid a drug investigation by the West Tennessee Drug Task Force.

Investigators said a large organization was selling synthetic meth, marijuana and cocaine.  The District Attorney filed a public nuisance petition against the owner.

The investigation is ongoing, but there have not been any arrests made yet.

Wednesday, special agents stood guard outside the shop.  Last week, they confiscated 733 packets of synthetic meth.

Agents made purchases at the shop using a confidential informant.

A nearby business owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said he had no idea anything wrong was going on.  He said he did see what he called unusual people go in the shop.

"I see sometimes people I would not expect to come in here, but I don't think they can control who comes in their business or not," said the business owner.  "I'm pretty sure the way this is looking, it is very serious."

The business was open when agents arrived Wednesday morning.  It was also shut down for a day last week.

The business will remain shut until the owner of the Smoke Shop appears in court to answer the nuisance complaint.
