Father, son in critical condition after house fire

(WMC-TV) - A four-year-old boy and his father are in critical condition after an overnight house fire Thursday.

Several friends stepped in to help moments after hearing about the house fire that left Frank Duncan and his son in critical condition.

"They're amazing neighbors, people, great family, and have lots of friends," said neighbor Melanie Hargett.  "They've been out here all morning, pitching in, trying to salvage what they can for the family."

The fire broke out around 1:00 a.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Whiting Street.  Hargett lives next door.

"We heard popping noises," she said.  "When I went to check out the back door was when I saw the back corner of the house in flames and called 911."

When firefighters arrived on the scene, they immediately pulled Duncan and his son to safety from a front bedroom.

Witnesses said Duncan's wife had to break a window to get her and the couple's two-year-old son out of the home.  They were also taken to the hospital to be checked out.

"I have two children the exact same ages as them, so it really hit home," said Hargett.

Investigators said the fire was caused by an electrical panel that malfunctioned in a storage room.

"Thinking about them every minute," said Hargett.  "It's a terrible tragedy and you just never think it's going to happen right next door."

The home reportedly did not have a working smoke detector.
