Fundraiser at Mid-South school raises $11,000 for St. Jude

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South school has raised thousands of dollars for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Students at Overpark Elementary School in Olive Branch participate in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon annually with the goal to raise more money than last year.

Each student raised money by having sponsors who donate a certain amount of money for every math problem the student completed.

The school honored the students who raised the most in each grade, including fifth grader Joseph Chaffin, who raised more than $1,000.

This year alone, the school collected over $11,000 for the hospital.

"This is our sixth year and we've raised over $60,000 for St. Jude," said Overpark Elementary School principal Lisa Love.

"I felt like I was doing a good thing because I was helping the children be able to get far in life," said Chaffin.

St. Jude sent Overpark Elementary School a letter thanking the students for their generosity.  The letter commended the school for being one of the top fundraising schools in America.

Over the last 34 years, the Math-A-Thon school fundraiser has brought more than $400 million to St. Jude.
