Contractor injured in Valero fire dies

(WMC-TV) - One of three contractors injured at the Valero Refinery this week died Saturday.

A flash fire at the 180,000 barrel-per-day Memphis refinery broke out Tuesday.  Thirty-five-year-old Nicolas Cuevas died Saturday afternoon.

Cuevas was an employee of JV Industrial Companies, Ltd. out of Mission, Texas.  He was working at Valero as a mechanical craftsman.

Two other employees, including Cuevas' brother, were also injured in the fire.  They were still being treated at the MED Saturday.

The company's president issued the following statement Saturday:

"This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Cuevas' family.  We will do all we can to help them through their loss.  We continue to assist and support our other two injured employees, and their families."

The cause of the deadly fire is still under investigation.

A fund has been set up to assist the victims and their families. Donations can be made out to the "Cuevas-Torres Accident Fund"  and sent to Amegy Bank.  Attention Emily Etzler.  1075 Augusta. Houston, Texas 77057.
