Memphis father charged with shooting his son

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis father was arrested Sunday after police said he shot his own son.

Joseph Woods is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a deadly weapon after police said he shot his son, 19-year-old Joseph Woods, Jr.

"I just told him to lay still, I told him don't move," said neighbor James Fossett.  "I said, 'you've been shot, don't move, just lay still.'"

The shooting happened around 1:00 p.m. Sunday in the 3000 block of Princeton.

According to an affidavit of complaint, the father and son got into an argument.  Joseph Woods went to a shed located at the rear of the property and armed himself with a 9mm High Point firearm.

As Joseph Woods was walking back to the house, he saw his son near his vehicle and shot one time, striking his son in the left side of his body.

"He was transported to the MED," said Lt. Bobby Lawson with the Memphis Police Department.  "He is in non-critical condition from what I understand now."

Officers arrested the father at the scene.  He was then brought in for questioning, where he gave a written statement that he shot his son.

Officers recovered the gun at the scene as they spent the afternoon collecting evidence, hoping to learn what could have prompted a father to shoot his son.

"I can't justify the father for shooting him, and I can't justify the son for getting shot," said Fossett.  "For one reason, I don't know the situation of what happened between the father and the son."

Joseph Woods is reportedly due in court Monday morning.
