Memphis lawmakers compete to be council's ‘Biggest Loser'

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis City Council is getting smaller, but we're not talking about the number of seats. Instead, we're talking about a group effort by council members to get fit and become the legislative body's Biggest Loser.

Council members Wanda Halbert and Jim Strickland have lost more than 100 pounds combined.

Halbert has lost about 60 pounds while Strickland has lost more than 50.

They both say outside forces lit a fire under their feet.

"We had a little bet to see who won, who lost the most weight," said Strickland. "And then we went double or nothing."

Halbert is on a doctor-monitored, heart-healthy diet.

"I do portion control now and eat five, six times per day," she said.

Strickland is on the Atkin's Diet.

"Low-carb is basically meat, salad, cheese and eggs," he said.

Even when the two are on opposite sides of an issue, they come together on health.

"We definitely check with each other and check on our progress," Halbert said. "That's been kind of a motivator for both of us."

"We talk about losing weight," Strickland said. "For a while I lost more than her. Now she's lost more than me. So, it's kind of nice to have that encouragement."

Halbert said her quality of life has improved.

"It's very different," she said. "Things that you couldn't do, now you can do. You're not as tired. You're not dragging all of the time."

Strickland said his son is noticing the difference.

"We play one-on-one basketball together," he said. "He says now I have hops like D.J. Stephens. It's a little bit less than D.J., but I still have some hops"

Stickland said the city's budget process could take a cue from he and Halbert's weight loss.

"Maybe city government needs to tighten their belt like Wanda and me."

Councilman Bill Morrison has also dropped 34 pounds. He started Atkin's after Strickland.
