(WMC-TV) - A Shelby County Commissioner is demanding an apology for Millington after a newspaper editorial compared his constituents to the odd teen out in high school.

The Commercial Appeal editorial that has some Millington residents upset was written by Wendi Thomas. Tonight one Shelby County Commissioner called for an apology.

In it she says she feels sorry for Millington because compared to the other Shelby County suburbs it always comes in last and references the difficulty Millington will have creating a municipal school district compared to the other suburbs.

Her column compares the suburbs to the social dynamic in any high school.

She said if Germantown is the school quarterback then Millington "isn't athletic, charismatic or particularly attractive."

Shelby County Commissioner Terry Roland is offended by the column, while the editor of the CA says he respects Thomas' opinion.

"I'm a politician," Roland said. "You can take shots at me all day long. I'm fair game, but don't take shots at the community."

"I know people can be a little critical of Millington, but it's a really decent town," said resident Mellisa Foster.

Both Roland and Millington Mayor Linda Carter plan to write a letter to the editor in response to Wendi Thomas' column.

In his letter to the CA Roland also mentions the possibility of boycotting the paper's advertisers if columns like the one Thomas wrote about Millington continue to be printed.
