Teens arrested after fights in downtown Memphis

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police arrested about a dozen teens Tuesday night after hundreds of teens out on spring break converged in downtown Memphis.

The teens were hauled away by police after fights broke out on Beale Street at Main Street and near Riverside.

"It was several little skirmishes," said Beale Street Merchants Association president Ty Agee.  "I think it was a lot of unsupervised teenagers."

Agee said he saw the fights break out on a busy night in downtown Memphis.

Former White Stripes lead singer Jack White performed at the New Daisy Theatre, a sold-out crown packed the FedEx Forum to watch the Grizzlies play the Lakers, and hundreds of teens reportedly decided to meet downtown through Facebook.

"I've been on Beale Street for 20 years and I actually have to say there's been few times that we've had as good a police force as we have right now," said Agee.

Agee said police handled the situation without any problems.  Plans are in place to beef police presence for the rest of the week.

"Beale Street is kid-friendly, but at a certain time of night, that should be under adult supervision," said Agee.

The fights did not take place in the historic Beale Street district.  All of the arrests came on Main Street and Beale and at Beale at Riverside.
