Mid-South teen hit by drag racers reunites with therapy dogs

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South teen injured after he was hit by illegal drag racers was able to meet the therapy dogs who helped save his life.

Darreontae Martin got a chance to reunite with the therapy dogs Wednesday.

Martin is a Sheffield High School football player who was hit by two drag racers last May.  He suffered broken legs and multiple injuries after he was hit on Knight Road.

Martin developed a bond with the therapy dogs that came to visit him while he was in the hospital.  When workers with Mid-South Therapy Dogs realized that his family would not be able to pay all of their medical bills, they decided to raise some money to help cover those expenses.

Wednesday, they presented Martin with a check for $3,900.

"The dogs actually helped me get through this because when you're in there, the whole time it's like you're thinking about how I'm going to get out of this and get better," said Martin.  "You're really not worrying about anything else but your natural health."

Since the accident, Martin said it has been a long road to recovery, but he is thankful for all the support he has received from the community.

Police are still investigating the case and no arrests have been made.
