MY TURN: Stop fighting the Civil War

(WMC-TV) - Being the optimistic person that I am, I would like to think there will come a day when Memphians quit fighting the Civil War.

It's like the movie "Groundhog Day." You wake up and everyday we're still at it. This week's chief combatant is Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks. At Monday's County Commission meeting, Brooks actually referenced the Civil War by name, declaring that "Y'all Lost."

I'm not sure precisely who she considered "Y'all" to be, but those of us who live in the Mid-South do lose every time our leaders revert to this childish game.

Brooks' bizarre commentary on this particular day included the accusation that the Ku Klux Klan could be running county-funded social programs - a comment that she refused to back down from after having 24 hours to regain her senses.

In the same meeting, Brooks addressed the Shelby County head of community services in a demeaning manner, and finally, she wanted to split hairs over the definition of the word racist. Perhaps Commissioner Brooks should spend more time studying the definition of the word, leader.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, e-mail or call 800-465-1210.
