Mother charged has ties to shooting after high school game

(WMC-TV) - A mother of three arrested for her alleged role in the shooting of a young boy has ties to another high-profile Memphis crime.

Police arrested 45-year-old Gail Sheppard Tuesday for allegedly being with her adult son when he is said to have shot a child.  Sheppard allegedly drove her son away from the scene.

Sheppard's family is defending her.

"No, it's not right," said her mother, Bernice Riddle.  "I promise you that."

Both Riddle and Sheppard's 16-year-old daughter, Tatyana Moore, said she is innocent a victim of lies.  They admitted Sheppard was in the area, but that her son, Titus Sheppard, was never in her car and did not shoot anyone.

"He was pulling out, too, but he wasn't in the car," said Moore.  "He was in the car with his girlfriend."

Witnesses said Gail Sheppard drove to the area around Walker and Seattle in her Dodge Avenger with her son, who started arguing with a crowd of people standing outside.

A witness then told police that Gail Sheppard pulled up, her son got out of the car and began shooting, hitting a 16-year-old boy.

"He wasn't in the car with his momma," said Riddle.  "If he were, I'd say so because I ain't a lying person.  I don't like lying."

This January, Gail Sheppard was on the scene when a teenager was shot and killed after a basketball game at Central High School.

"When I got up to him he was still breathing," she told Action News 5 in January.  "I was doing CPR and telling him, you know, 'Baby, hold on.  Stay with us.  Please don't leave.'"

Gail Sheppard is still being held on a $50,000 bond.  She is charged with facilitation of a felony.  Her son is still at large for the shooting.
