Flooding cancels General Sessions Court

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County General Sessions Civil Division courts were closed Friday due to flooding in the basement.

County officials did not blame the flooding on Friday's heavy rain, but a busted pipe.

"We had a main pipeline that burst down in the basement," said General Sessions Court Clerk Ed Stanton.

Powered light fixtures dangled close to the surface as firefighters were sole-deep in the water.

A high-powered vacuum truck and yellow crime scene tape blocked the entrance to the building.  A hose ran into the building to suck out the floodwater.

The old Shelby County Courthouse is home to Shelby County Civil Court system, most of which shut down for the day as a result of the flood.

"The judges, they closed their courts, and that was their decision, and we follow after them,"  said Stanton.  "All the cases that were set for today have been rescheduled for next Friday."

County officials said they expect everything to be back to normal Monday morning.
