(WMC-TV) - It was supposed to a family clean-up project, but it went horribly wrong and ended with the death of a father and husband.

The Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office says 43-year-old Calvin Whitaker and his family were in the process of tearing down a house in Homestown when it fell in, but not before Calvin pushed his family out of the way.

"He told his wife and all the kids ‘Go, go y'all,' because the house had fallen," said Calvin's father Jesse Whitaker.

Whitaker says his son managed to get his pregnant wife and at least 10 of his 11 children out of the way of the fallen home.

But, it was too late for his son.

Emergency crews had to cut a hole in the roof of the home to get Whitaker out of the debris.

The only question remaining is: what about the little boy who was hurt as well.

A three-year-old child was hurt in the collapse and flown to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis.

Family members say he will recover, but has an elbow injury and will likely require surgery.

The family was not living in the house, but do own the home. They were in the process of tearing down.
