(WMC-TV) – It was a busy afternoon in the courtroom as everyone waited for a jury to be seated in the case of a woman on trial for murdering her own baby.

Jury selection began around 1 p.m. Monday in the case of a woman accused of killing her 11-month-old daughter.

Shakara Dickens is charged with first degree murder.

More than 50 potential jurors showed up at 201 Poplar Monday. The court narrowed that number down to 12 jurors plus 2 alternates that would actually be seated on the jury.

When her daughter Lauryn first disappeared, Dickens told police she gave the baby to a stranger claiming to be a friend of Benjamin Norfleet, the baby's father.

"They wanted to interview him about his baby missing and he said ‘What are you talking about?'" said Robert Spence, Norfleet's attorney.

Investigators believe Dickens killed her baby, but they have never found her body. It was a crime that caught many neighbors by surprise.

"She needs to be checked out," said Phyllis Davenport. "She might be going through postpartum depression and just couldn't handle it."

The trial is expected to get underway first thing Tuesday morning.

The last time she was in court, Dickens' attorneys filed for a continuance, saying there was some new information in the case.
