(WMC-TV) - A Marshall County man is dead and police in Holly Springs, MS, are questioning a person of interest who may have been involved in the murder.
DeMarcus Nevels, 35, was gunned down in his car early Sunday morning.
Holly Springs Police told Action News 5 that the person of interest came into contact with Nevels the night he was killed.
Nevels' family wants to know why someone would go after the father of two, leaving them to pick up the pieces.
"I love him and I miss him and I hate that this happened. I thought we were going to have more years together," said Nevels' cousin Angel Oliver.
Investigators say the cold-blooded killing was no accident.
"The car was shot into 8 times and he had multiple gunshot wounds," said Sergeant Elijah Wilson with the Holly Springs Police Department.
Bears, balloons, and streamers now line the pole in front of where Nevels, known as Phael to friends, was shot.
"I just want to know why someone would do this to him, he has family he has friends," Oliver cried.
This isn't the first time the family has been forced to overcome a tragic ending.
"Phael's oldest brother was murdered also in Holly Springs so this is extremely difficult for all of us," said Oliver.
Holly Springs Police believe the shooter was hiding around the corner of the building waiting for Nevels.
"That many shots they were actually targeting him," Wilson said.
Oliver has no clue why someone would target her first cousin and break her family apart, again.
"Are they satisfied? Are they happy? Are they still carrying that around with them? Because he's gone and we can't get him back," she said.
So far, investigators haven't found anyone who actually saw the murder.
"Next door at the pool hall there were people that heard shots but nobody seen anything once they heard the shots," Wilson said.
Police are asking that anyone who saw or heard anything come forward to help them solve the case and give Nevel's family closure.
"I wish somebody would come forward and say something so we can have peace," said Oliver.
