(WMC-TV) – Memphis police want to know who shot a man to death over a broken down television.

Katherine Boyland is still grieving the loss of her brother as she tried to understand why someone would kill him.

She says the murder of her brother, 76-year-old Lewis Ray, was senseless.

"I got a call saying he was at the VA and he had a gunshot wound to his left stomach," she said. "I didn't know what to think."

It happened between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of Faxon. That's where officers found Ray after he had been shot by unknown suspects during a robbery.

Boyland says Ray liked to collect unwanted scrap from residents who left items on their curbs.

"He had a TV on the cart that somebody wanted and he refused to give it to them and they shot him," she said.

Ray was transported to the VA Hospital in Memphis where he later died.

"He was a good person," Boyland said. "Everybody around here knew him. He never bothered anybody."

While the suspects have not been caught, Boyland has a message for whoever is responsible.

"He didn't have to kill him and I want justice done or whatever for whoever did it," she said.

If you have any information that can help police, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
