Memphis firefighter arrested for kidnapping, rape

(WMC-TV) – A Memphis Fire Department lieutenant was arrested by Memphis police after they say he held his girlfriend hostage and raped her.

Lt. Wendell Guinn has been with the Memphis Fire Department since 1989.

The city can't say if he's been suspended as a result of his arrest on burglary, kidnapping and rape charges.

People who live in Hickory Hill were surprised to hear of the alleged hell a neighbor endured at the hands of Memphis Fire Department Lt. Wendell Guinn.

"It's happening too often with leaders in our community, you know, police department, fire department," said neighbor Wesley Ricks.

Police say 45-year-old Guinn forced his way into the home of his 60-year-old girlfriend late Monday morning then prevented her from leaving a bedroom while they fought.

According to an affidavit, Guinn performed a sex act against the woman's will until she "fought and screamed for help from a family member who called 911."

"It's very shocking," said Ricks. "It's sad things like this happen, but I'm a man of faith and hope she's okay"

Guinn was arrested late Tuesday and charged with aggravated burglary, kidnapping and rape.

Police say the longtime firefighter refused to open the door to his girlfriend's bedroom until they threatened to knock it down.

Guinn also owns and operates a tree trimming service, according to his sources.

The lieutenant is due in court Wednesday morning.
