(WMC-TV) – It's been a vacant field for years, but now there is a new proposal to redevelop the place that used to be called the Mall of Memphis.

The idea received city council approval Tuesday.

Ever since the Mall of Memphis was demolished in 2003, city leaders have hoped someone would redevelop the property.

Council members voted to approve Johnson Development Associate's plan to build on the site.

The South Carolina based company has built a string of warehouses around the country and now wants to build a similar facility at the old Mall of Memphis site.

In documents submitted to the city, Johnson Development describes its land use plan as "office/warehouse, light manufacturing and distribution facilities for large companies in need of warehouse space for distribution of products."

Using a series of maps and charts, the company said that the site's close proximity to the interstate would make it attractive to businesses that might consider locating at the multimillion dollar site.

One question now: how will the people who live in the area react to the traffic that would accompany a warehouse facility?

There's also the question of whether building a warehouse in the area will make property taxes in the area go up, down or have no effect at all.

Some of those questions could be answered in the coming weeks as Johnson Development Associates releases more details about how it plans to develop the area.
