(WMC-TV) – The Shelby County Election Commission won't allow Shelby County suburbs to hold referendums to decide if the towns should create their own school districts.

The commission denied the requests based on the advice of its attorneys.

The Tennessee state Attorney General says the consolidation of Memphis and Shelby County schools must be complete before any new school districts can be created.

The suburban leaders had hoped to get the referendums on the May 10 ballot.
