Man shot outside Messick Vo-Tech

Memphis police are investigating a shooting that happened outside a vocational school Thursday afternoon. Memphis police are investigating a shooting that happened outside a vocational school Thursday afternoon.

(WMC-TV) - Neighbors and students near Messick Vo-Tech School were on edge Thursday after police said a man was shot several times just before noon.

The lunch hour at the school was interrupted when a man was gunned down right outside the building.  Thursday afternoon, the suspect was still on the loose.

Police said the victim was transported to the MED in extremely critical condition.  The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving.

"After 11 I left here and I am walking back through the neighborhood, seeing the police cars," said student Ricky Hood.

The area in the university district is surrounded by homes, a home day care, and a grocery store.

"I was talking to my friends at this corner grocery store and he was telling me someone got shot down there," said neighbor Robert Simpson.  "Now let me just say this situation that happened right down here don't happen every day, because this is a peaceful quiet neighborhood."

Police would not say whether the victim knew the shooter or if either men knew anyone inside the school.

Students said they hope it is an isolated incident and they do not have to fear going back to class.

"Everything seemed to be kind of cool, but you never know," said Hood.  "You just never know."

Police have not released many details about the shooter.  If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
