(WMC-TV) - A fire forced one family out of its Cordova home late Wednesday night and several other families had to be evacuated until the fire was under control.

Firefighters from around the county rushed to the scene on Summerfield.

"Multiple engine companies from three fire departments," said Brent Perkins, of the Shelby County Fire Department. "Shelby County, Germantown, Memphis Fire all made the scene."

A neighbor sent Action News 5 a photo that showed flames engulfing the entire structure.

"There was a lot of fire coming from the windows, in the garage, the garage door itself, even into living spaces above the garage and front door," said Perkins.

According to investigators a mom, a dad and their three children were in the home when the fire started and they were forced to run for their lives.

"Yeah, the occupants in the home were there," said Perkins. "They heard noises that made them begin to investigate what was going on."

Everyone in the home got out safely and, as an extra precaution, firefighters evacuated residents from two neighboring homes.

"We did take precautions and asked the homeowners on both sides of the structures to go ahead and leave their homes just in case we had any exposure," said Perkins.

The good news is that no one was injured and after several hours the two neighboring families were allowed to return to their homes.

However it looks like the home where the fire broke out will be a total loss.

Investigators do not know what caused the fire.
