159th Combat Aviation Brigade finishes deployment

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - Fort Campbell's 159th Combat Aviation Brigade has signaled the end to its latest deployment to Afghanistan that encompassed 700 air assaults and more than 4,000 medical evacuation flights.

Although the last soldiers of the brigade returned to the Army installation on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line a month ago, the brigade didn't formally case its colors until Thursday.

The 159th deployed in early 2011 to Kandahar and conducted aviation operations over an area the size of Texas. The helicopter unit was a key asset to ground forces in Afghanistan and engaged enemy targets, destroyed drugs and explosives and assisted NATO and Afghan soldiers.

The Leaf-Chronicle reports that the brigade lost only six soldiers during the deployment, who were all killed in a single incident by an improvised explosive device in May.
