Memphis begins formal search for athletic director

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The University of Memphis has formally begun the search for an athletic director to replace retiring R.C. Johnson.

The school said Friday it will enlist the sports search firm Eastman-Beaudine to find a replacement.

Applications will be reviewed beginning April 6 and will continue until the position has been filled.

The university's athletic department has an annual budget of $38 million with 19 intercollegiate teams in NCAA Division I.

The 70-year-old Johnson announced his retirement last November after 43 years in athletics at nine universities.
