Memphis police find 920 pounds of marijuana in 18 wheeler

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police found nearly half a ton of marijuana on a Bluff City highway Friday.

Memphis police officers took almost a million dollars of drugs out of circulation.

Police Director Toney Armstrong says a bust this big will likely prevent violent crime wherever it was headed.

Officers say the 64 bundles of marijuana weighing 920 pounds

Armstrong applauded the men and women from the department's Organized Crime Unit who found the marijuana in the cargo area of an 18 wheeler driven by 34-year-old Rodriguez Eliseo, of La Feria, TX.

Eliseo has been charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to manufacture, deliver or sell.

"This isn't your regular, run of the mill drug dealer," said Armstrong. "It gives the appearance that these are major drug offenders."

The suspect was traveling on I-40 near Warford when he was pulled over for straddling lanes.

The marijuana was hidden among a load of metal plates and aluminum transmission covers. It's unknown where the truck was going or if the drugs were meant for Memphis.

The 18 wheeler is leased to ETC Elam Trucking Company out of Stantonville, TN, though it's not known if the suspect was an employee.

"Someone will be guarding this load with a firearm," Armstrong said. "More than likely, someone would attempt to rob somebody of this much (marijuana)."
