Theater festival to focus on women

(WMC-TV) – A new festival is coming to Memphis. It's focused on theater and honors women who write the stories that make it on stage and it's already getting global attention.

During a news conference at Playhouse on the Square, legendary Memphis actress and playwright Ruby O'Gray and others announced that her play will headline a new annual festival called the Women's Theater Festival of Memphis.

"I believe, after the first one, it will take off like any wonderful event that is happened in Memphis from the Blues Festival to anything else," said O'Gray, who's play is called "Sisters of the Cloth." "They are going to come from all over the world."

The festival will run August 2 through August 4. Submissions are being taken right now from women who want their works featured.

"The subject matter had to be about women, or written by a woman or directed by a woman," said Karen Moore, organizer.

Organizers say audiences will see the best of stage plays, musicals and dance.

Dance productions for the festival will take place at Playhouse on the Square. You can also see productions across the street at Circuit Playhouse and down the street at Theaterworks.

The goal is to showcase women in theater.

"So the central characters will be women, but there will be men involved and men on the crews," said Moore.

"We have received submissions as far away as the United Kingdom and are still receiving submissions up to March 31," said O'Gray.

The festival will kick off with a gala event called the Guy-Yaka Awards that will honor 12-women who have achieved success in the field of theater and are role models to other women.
