(WMC-TV) – A Memphis three-year-old is in critical condition after investigators say she was punched by her stepmother.

Police records indicate the three-year-old stopped breathing at one point. Now she's under doctor's care at LeBonheur while her stepmother is locked up at 201 Poplar.

Shannel May is known as Mama Shannel to her three and five-year-old stepdaughters whom she's now charged with criminally abusing.

Sunday morning, she was babysitting the girls at her Nutbush home when, according to the arrest ticket, the three-year-old stopped breathing.

The five-year-old told their biological mother that Mama Shannel choked and punched the three-year-old.

The girls' biological mother took the three-year-old to Methodist South, but she was eventually rushed to Le Bonheur.

Police records say the three-year-old has two different spots where she's bleeding on the brain. She also has several bruises on her face and body.

Doctors told police the toddler's injuries are "not consistent with accident," but rather "blunt trauma/abuse."

May is now locked up at 201 Poplar on $100,000 bond.

This marks her third arrest in the past six weeks.

She was once employed as an assistant manager at the Dollar General on RaMill Road. However, police say May was caught embezzling a total of more than $5,700 from the cash register and safe throughout the end of January and beginning of February.
