UT student from Memphis dies after spring break accident

(WMC-TV) - University of Tennessee senior and Christian Brothers High School graduate Ryan Edwards was a friend to many.

He was in Destin with friends enjoying his last spring break as a college student when he was injured in a random accident that took his life Tuesday.

Edwards was pronounced dead at a hospital in Pensacola, Florida from injuries he sustained Thursday while on spring break.

Edwards and his friends had stayed up all night to watch the sunrise - at daylight he ran towards the water and dove in, but the tide was out and he misjudged the depth.

His friends saw him floating and called 911 - at the hospital his family learned Edwards was brain dead, though his body kept fighting until this morning.

Now, friends and family by the hundreds here in the Mid-South and across the country are leaving messages on his CaringBridge web page.

Even when he was in high school at Christian Brothers - his friends on the memorial page said he was full of life, and passionate about the environment.

His friends said he worked for University of Tennessee recycling and even drove a recycling truck, he was set to graduate in May with a degree in Environmental studies.

His mom wrote a journal entry on the site that said, "I feel like I am having an outer body experience. One of the chaplains said that it is because God is carrying me through this nightmare."

Edwards was also an organ donor - his visitation will be Thursday and his funeral Friday, both services at Christ United Methodist Church.
