Jackson man asks police to put him in jail

(WMC-TV) - A Jackson, Tennessee man turned himself into police Tuesday night.  The only problem was police were not looking for him.

"Apparently he wanted to come to jail real bad," said Inspector Alphonso Newbern with the Madison County Sheriff's Office.  "Most of the time people want to get out of jail."

Investigators said Clint Sims showed up in the lobby of the jail around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and said he wanted to turn himself in.  Police asked Sims if he had any warrants.

"'No, but I will,' and that's when he stole a gumball machine," said Newbern.

Investigators said Sims picked up the gumball machine and broke the glass on the door and a window to the criminal justice center next door.  He was arrested and placed in a cell by himself.

Relatives said Sims' house burned Sunday night.  They said he did not have any electricity and candles caused the fire.

Despite the unfortunate event, investigators said people do not usually pick jail for a place to live.

"This is my first case, and I've been in law enforcement for over 20-something years," said Newbern.

Sims is charged with burglary, theft of property, and felony vandalism.  Jail officials had him evaluated and it was determined he should be in jail.
