Missing North Mississippi man found safe

(WMC-TV) - A missing Mid-South father was found safe in Georgia late Thursday night.

William Lawrence, 79, went missing from St. Francis Hospital's parking lot Wednesday.  He was last seen in southern Mississippi around 10:45 a.m. Thursday, and he was headed north.

"They're totally devastated and upset because he hasn't been located," said Commander Kelley McMillan with the Marshall County Sheriff's Office.

Lawrence was located at a truck stop south of Atlanta.  He was examined by paramedics who determined he was fine.

His wife and daughter have spoken to him by phone.

Lawrence's family was too upset to talk about the missing Marshall County resident.  He and his wife and daughter were at St. Francis Hospital where the daughter was having outpatient surgery.

Marshall County investigators said Lawrence left his family at the hospital and went to the parking lot to pick up his truck so he could go back and get his family.  That was the last time they saw him.

Investigators said Lawrence, who was in the early stages of dementia, asked security at the hospital to help him find his truck and they did.  He then asked them to help find his wife.

"They said, 'where's she at?'  He said, 'you know, she's at home,' so he leave the parking lot," said McMillan.

Lawrence did not show up at his home in Waterford, Mississippi outside of Holly Springs, but he did surface in Columbus, Mississippi to try to buy gas.

"He went to give them his driver's license to ask the transaction and purchase gas," said McMillan.

Lawrence finally found his credit card and got the gas.  That was the last anyone has heard of him.
