JSU Student Shooter Case To Grand Jury

Cousin of victim charged in JSU shooting Cousin of victim charged in JSU shooting

(WLBT) - The family of a Jackson State student, devastated after the murder of their loved one, learns he died at the hands of his own cousin.

Wednesday Jackson police arrested 25-Year-Old Jarrod Emerson for the murder of Nolan Ryan Henderson.

Henderson, a freshman at JSU was shot during an altercation at the Palisades apartments early Sunday morning.

Police say Emerson fired several rounds, killing Henderson while confronting football players who had assaulted him earlier.

"We believe the bullet that killed the deceased came from the 40 caliber handgun he had. He had a 40 caliber as well as a 9 mm," says Assistant Chief Lee Vance.

Emerson turned himself in and provided the weapons to police. Although the shooting may have been accidental, the charge is still murder.

Henderson's family says he was assaulted by members of the football team, but no charges on have been filed at this time.

Vance says, "According to results from the autopsy, there were no visible injuries to Mr. Henderson's body other than scars on his knuckles and some type of scar or wound to his head. Based on that, there's nothing that raises this to a felony assault."

Police are still urging anyone who saw the assault to contact their office.

The murder case will be presented to the Hinds county grand jury.
