Winning numbers revealed in record Mega Millions lottery

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Mega Millions mania has gripped the nation as the jackpot rises to a record $640 million.

Friday night, the winning numbers were revealed.  They are 46-23-38-4-2 with a megaball of 23.

Gene's One Stop will seem off the beaten path to most Memphians, but it has some of the highest lottery sales in Memphis.  Many hope that after Friday night's Mega Millions drawing, they can take a permanent vacation.

"I'm going to just live and be happy and sit down," said Luther Nelson.  "I'm tired of working."

The record-breaking sum has been growing since January 27 and has generated more than $17 million in lottery sales in Tennessee alone.  Some of that money has been collected at Gene's One Stop.

"Actually, we are number one in the district and above average for the entire state," said owner Nick Vrettos.

The jackpot went from $540 million to $640 million overnight.  Some say that kind of money would make anything possible.

"I'm going to buy me a helicopter where I can fly myself to work," said one ticket holder.

The odds that there will be a winner tonight are very high.  The lottery commission expects 97 to 98 percent of possible combinations will be sold.  There is only a two to three percent chance that no one will win.

The odds of having a winning ticket are not as good, at 176 million to one.

Even the employees at Gene's One Stop are getting in on the action.  They pooled $110.

The previous record Mega Millions jackpot was $390 million in March of 2007.  A Georgia truck driver and a couple from New Jersey split the winnings.  Each ended up with more than $116 million.

Lines are expected to remain long throughout Friday evening as more and more people get off work with the deadline to buy lottery tickets looming.

People buying tickets at the Exxon station on Poplar and Highland said they know the chance is slim that they will win, but there is still a chance.

Many people said they were making their second and third trip to buy tickets.
