Nearly 5,000 speeding tickets written in March

(WMC-TV) - Memphians have seen an increased police presence on the interstate this month, and Action News 5 has uncovered that is no coincidence.

"It seems like they're just steady on the side of the road stopping you, writing more tickets than they've been doing," said driver Tony Yates.

There have been almost 5,000 tickets written on I-240 by uniform patrol officers in March.

Memphis police could not provide a month-by-month comparison, but said they wrote more tickets than usual.

Last July and August, tickets written by Memphis police officers dropped 30 percent compared to the year before.  No one gave an official reason for the decline, but it happened at the same time the city cut employee pay.

"I think there's other things they could be doing with our dollars than writing tickets," said Yates.

It is unclear how long increased enforcement on the interstate will continue.
