Rally for Trayvon Martin held in Midtown Memphis

(WMC-TV) - Rallies were held across the country Saturday in support of Trayvon Martin and condemning the man who shot and killed him.

Neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman claims he shot Martin in self defense.

A vigil was held in Midtown Memphis where concerned citizens drew parallels between the shooting death of Martin and another Mid-South boy.

The event included an original music production from two young men calling themselves "Yung Muny" and "Zone 3."  The song, titled "It's OK," was a tribute to Martin and DeAunte Farrow, a young man killed by a West Memphis police officer in 2007.

The West Memphis officer was later cleared of all wrongdoing in the shooting.

Farrow's mother was in attendance, but declined to speak on camera.  Event organizer Nina Holly spoke for the family five years after the loss of Farrow.

"Trayvon Martin was 17 years old, same age her son would have been," said Holly.  "We just wanted to invite the community out, provide her with words of encouragement, and just provide comfort to her."
