Police: Father charged with negligent homicide over toddler’s death

(WMC-TV) A 24-year-old father is facing criminally negligent homicide charges after his two-year-old daughter died when her head got stuck in the automatic window of his sport utility vehicle.

According to police, Reginald Ballard  went inside a Captain D's restaurant Sunday evening - leaving his three children, ages six months, two years and four years, alone in the vehicle with the keys in the ignition.

His two-year-old daughter, Reniyah Ballard, was sitting in the back seat - she got out of the seatbelt and was looking out the window when she engaged the power, trapping herself between the glass and the door frame.

Police said Ballard returned to the vehicle several minutes later and found that the toddler's airway had been cut off.

Ballard attempted CPR but was unsuccessful, he drove to a Memphis fire station at 3345 Millington.

The little girl was transported to LeBonheur Children's Hospital where she was pronounced dead - an autopsy is currently pending.
