Arkansas awards 8K lottery scholarships

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The state has notified 8,000 high school seniors that they are eligible for scholarships funded by the Arkansas lottery.

The state Higher Education Department says notices went out Tuesday and that 3,500 students accepted by Thursday morning. The agency says that the number of students accepting the funding is growing by the hour.

Students at 4-year schools will get $4,500 for the 2012-2013 academic year, and community college students will get $2,250.

The agency says 14,000 traditional students had begun or completed the application process, and 4,000 non-traditional students had applied.

Students awarded scholarships 2010 will continue to receive $5,000 and $2,500 respectively, as long as they remain eligible. Recipients from 2011 will receive $4,500 and $2,250.
