Bill seeks Tenn. charter school transparency

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A proposal that would require Tennessee charter schools to be subject to the state's open meetings law is headed to the governor for his consideration.

The measure was sent to Gov. Bill Haslam on Thursday after passing the Senate 29-1. The companion bill was unanimously approved in the House 98-0 last month.

The legislation requires charter schools to maintain a website and post certain notices and other information, such as meetings and what issues may be addressed.

Republican Senate sponsor Mike Bell of Riceville said the intention is to hold charter schools to the same transparency standards as public schools.
