Police searching for suspect who shot 12-year-old

(WMC-TV) – Police are searching for a suspect who shot a 12-year-old during a neighborhood fight Thursday.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Wordsworth in Raleigh.

Neighbor Tammy Johnson said she worries every day about seeing police in her neighborhood.

"I have a child, that's why I don't let my child come out and play," said Johnson.

Witnesses said the 12-year-old was arguing with another young man before the shooting.  He was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition while officers began their search for the shooter.  ATF agents also arrived on the scene to help in the search.

The suspect was last seen running away in a black hoodie.

"These kids need discipline from the parents," said one neighbor who asked not to be identified.

The neighbor blamed problems in the neighborhood on young people who stay out all hours of the night.

"It's not the grown up, it's babies carrying guns," said the neighbor.

Many neighbors said parental and community intervention is long overdue.

There is still no word on why the ATF was involved in the investigation.

Call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH with any information on the suspect.
