Church gives shoes to people in need this Easter

(WMC-TV) - New Bethel Temple COGIC celebrated Easter Sunday by giving shoes to people in the community who need them.

"We've got several hundred pairs of shoes that will be coming in," said Rev. Arron Litzsey.

Makayla Weston was among the children who received a new pair of tennis shoes.

Church leaders said their shoe giveaway grew out of a partnership with officials at several city schools.  The officials told Litzsey that some students were not showing up for school because they did not have shoes to wear.  That was when New Bethel Temple came up with the idea to give shoes away for Easter.

"Since we talk about renewal and walking in newness, how about give a kid or give a young person the opportunity to literally walk in newness," said Litzsey.  "That's what this day is all about for us.  It's not about Easter egg hunts, it's not about bunny rabbits, but it's about doing what Christ commissioned us to do."

Monica Weston said the free shoes will do a lot for her daughter's self esteem and peace of mind.

"It means a lot," she said.  "For one, it's a gift from her pastor, and she loves him dearly, and she just loves shoes like her mama I guess."

"It's just a part of who we are, we live to serve," said Litzsey.  "That's what we teach here.  That's what we preach here is service.  We model Jesus Christ.  He was the chief servant and we follow in his footsteps."
