Earle, Forrest City finances on board's agenda

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas State Board of Education is considering removing two east Arkansas school districts from its list of fiscally distressed schools.

The board meets Monday and will consider requests from the Earle and Forrest City school districts to be removed from the list of financially troubled schools. The state says both schools have met the requirements needed for removal from the list.

The Earle district says it closed a middle school and reconfigured the district so it had two campuses: kindergarten through sixth grade and seventh through 12th grade.

Forrest City says it's saved money by not filling open positions and reducing employee travel costs, among other measures.

Also Monday, the state board will consider classifying three more districts as fiscally distressed: the Brinkley, Hartford and Western Yell County districts.
