(WMC-TV) – A child is recovering after being hit by a van Monday night. Now family members and a driver are telling a cautionary tale while they're thankful that little boy will be alright.

Calabe Brooks was brought to Le Bonheur to recover from his injuries. The three-year-old ran out into the street right in front of his horrified relatives.

Brooks darted out into the street as his great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother were watching him in the front yard.

Relatives believe the three year old ran into the street because he wanted to get to his mother who was visiting a friend across the street.

"I was going slow enough," said the driver Kelton Taylor. "He ran into the side of the van. I stopped."

The three-year-old fell under the van.

However, as adults were worried about Calabe who was bleeding, the little boy was worried because he thought he was in trouble.

"He thought the police were going to pick him up and he went to hollering," said Dessie Hall, the boy's great-great-grandmother.

Kelton Taylor is just glad Calabe was not seriously hurt.

"It was frightening because it happened to a child. I was involved," said Taylor. "I don't never want to see a child get hit. I have kids of my own."

Calabe Brooks is expected to be okay.

So far, no citations have been issued, but police are still investigating.
