Whartons hope to change students' lives

(WMC-TV) - Ruby Wharton is going public about a mission she shares with her husband, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.

The Whartons have quietly donated to students in need for the last eight years.

"Probably compared to other foundations it's small, but it's not small with the heart," said Ruby Wharton.

For nearly a decade, the Whartons have donated to education causes according to need, including emergency college tuition, school supplies for a specific group of public school students, or a donation to a tolerance program.

The Wharton Charitable Fund hosts a golf classic every spring.  Ruby Wharton said education is the great equalizer.

"Opening the mind, creating a desire to learn, to pursue a dream, opportunities," she said.  "This is something we've always believed in.  We have this common desire."

Ruby Wharton said she and her husband share common goals when it comes to community: instilling hope and creating dreams.

"A C Was not in the business of just trying to run a city, I think he's trying to make a difference," she said.  "What do you do with the people?  How do you change the people?  How do you give them a sense of hope?"

"To create a dream, to have dreams," Ruby Wharton continued.  "If you have a dream, there's hope and you will achieve.  So fundamentally, that's the reason we have that passion."

The Wharton Charitable Foundation 8th Annual Golf Classic is Saturday, April 14 at Galloway Golf Course.  Registration begins at 7 a.m. and tee time is at 8 a.m.  For more information, call (901) 685-7805.

If you cannot play golf, Ruby Wharton said you are welcome to join them for lunch at 12:30 p.m. and meet the mayor.
