Memphis man charged with indecent exposure at Overton Park

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man faces an indecent exposure charge in Overton Park.

The arrest comes just as citizens are making an effort to improve conditions at Overton Park and rid it of lewd behavior once and for all.

James Kenneth Faulk, 69, was arrested Monday after he was accused of exposing himself to a teenager and adult inside the park.

Faulk's neighbors on Macon Road said they are astonished.

"We've lived next door to him all this time and I've never seen him do anything like that," said neighbor Sherra McMinn.  "Never come outside in his underwear or nothing, much less expose himself."

The citizen-led Overton Park Conservancy said this is the type of behavior they want to eradicate.

"I'm a native Memphian, so I think it's time they clean it up," said park patron Gwen Brazzell.  "It needs to be a park where you can take your family, you can take your kids, you can take your dogs and you don't have to see any of that vile stuff going on.

Overton Park has had a long struggle with lewd behavior.

"Memphis needs more parks and more places for children to ... safely play," said mother Maryann Jeffers.

Trimmers have filled 100 dump trucks full of Overton Park overgrowth, a first move by the Overton Park Conservancy to improve conditions.  A "bark park" for dogs will also open in June.

Faulk's arrest shows the city is serious about ridding the park of indecent behavior.

Faulk has a prior arrest for indecent exposure in 1996.
