(WMC-TV) - Thursday morning rush hour traffic was snarled after police cornered a carjacking suspect on an overpass and tried to keep the man from jumping.

The man hung onto the outside of the overpass at I-240 and Perkins.

Investigators say he attacked a taxi cab driver early Thursday morning with a brick and then took off in the cab.

When police caught up with him, he threatened to jump onto the interstate.

His shenanigans forced drivers off the interstate before six o'clock Thursday morning and it continued through the heart of rush hour.

Memphis police effectively closed I-240 at Perkins in both directions so officers could safely get the carjacking suspect in custody.

The traffic nightmare lasted more than 90 minutes from 5:30 until a little after 7 in the morning when police finally got him in custody without incident and reopened the interstate.

Official charges are forthcoming in this case.
