University of Memphis introduces new athletic director

(WMC-TV) – After sixteen years, the winds of change are blowing at the University of Memphis. Monday, the school introduced the man who will soon be at the helm of its athletic programs.

The same man has been running Tiger athletics for 16 years, but that will change soon and Monday Tiger fans had the chance to meet the man who will take over.

Tom Bowen was welcomed with a standing ovation when he was introduced as the next athletic director at the University of Memphis.

"Goose bumps coming into the building here," he said. "I am just so excited and fired up to be here."

University President Dr. Shirley Raines said Bowen rose to the top of a large pool of candidates.

She said the U of M wanted an AD that would "continue the progress" established by R.C. Johnson over the past 16 years.

"As one person just told me within the past two hours - she definitely upgraded the position," said Johnson. "My wife said that."

Johnson officially retires in June which is when Bowen officially begins.

He says he's stepping into a good situation.

"Getting into the Big East and where you're going, and I wanted to be a part of that," said Bowen. "And it's exciting because of the young coaches that are here and the seasoned coaches that are here and the success that continues to be a part of this program."

But the incoming athletic director said class matters, too.

"I wanted to be at a university where that mattered as well," he said.

Bowen, whose background is in football, said that the vision at the University of Memphis is of student athletes with championship rings in one hand and diplomas in the other.
