(WMC-TV) - Police found the body of a man in a storage shed while responding to a report of a shooting in North Memphis.

The call came into police just after noon Wednesday.  Investigators scoured the backyard of a home in the 900 block of Chelsea.

Police located the body in a wooded area near a storage shed.  The person had been shot.

"It appears to be a male," said Lt. Col. Gloria Bullock with the Memphis Police Department.  "We are still investigating what occurred.  We don't have any identification or other information at this time."

Family members arrived on the scene in tears.

According to witnesses, several men tried to break into the shed when the elderly homeowner shot and killed one of the men.

"They say he was trying to steal an air conditioner out the back," said neighbor Napoleon Dickerson.  "As an owner myself, you have to protect what's yours."

Dickerson manages the barber shop next door.  He said this is not the first time his neighbor has been targeted.

"They robbed Willie Johnson a couple years ago, and they beat him up and took his gun away from him and shot him," said Dickerson.

The homeowner was reportedly not injured.
