Smoke shop closes due to sales of illegal substances

(WMC-TV) – A northeast Memphis smoke shop is permanently closed after being caught illegally selling "bath salts".

An investigation was launched after the West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force received a tip that The Smoke Shop on Sycamore View Road was selling illegal substances.

During the investigation, agents purchased controlled substances that were later identified as methlyone and MPPP. The sale of methylone is a class A misdemeanor and the sale of MPPP is a class B felony.  Both substances are in a class of synthetic drugs sold as "bath salts" or "plant food".

"This closure is particularly important because these drugs are marketed specifically to our young people," said D.A. Weirich in a written statement.

The closure comes on the heels of a temporary closure prompted by a nuisance petition filed on The Smoke Shop in March.
