Memphis police searching for man who stole bike from teen

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police are searching for a suspect who confronted a teenager on the streets and stole his bicycle.

Lena Haywood said what happened to her 13-year-old son was senseless.  Police are still searching for a man who stole the boy's bike as he was riding it.

Haywood said her son was on the way to a friend's house when the incident occurred.

"Why would you take anything from a child?" asked Haywood.  "First of all, he's a minor and you're of age.  Get a job and buy your own things."

Chopper 5 was over the scene around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the 4000 block of Bishops Bridge and Cromwell.  According to the police report, the unknown suspect told the boy, "Get off the bike or I'll shoot you."

"He described everything to police officers about how he looked, what he had on," said Haywood.  "The blue bandana, hoodie, black pants and shoes."

Officers said the man made it look like he had a weapon and stole the bike.

"It's sickening because my children got the bike through a donation," said Haywood.  "We were in a fire on Cromwell.  We lost a house, truck, everything.  So FedEx donated a lot of things to my kids."

While Haywood is upset, she said she is thankful her son was not hurt.

"It's sad, kids can't go and play and enjoy themselves without a grown up or someone older than them taking things from them that don't belong to them," she said.  "I don't think that's right."
