Two men arrested for attempting to smuggle meat from Walmart

(WMC-TV) - Two suspects were arrested after their elaborate scheme to smuggle meat out of Walmart backfired.

Eric Wilson and Clayton Cates were arrested and charged with stealing more than $600 worth of meat from Walmart on Winchester Wednesday night.

Their technique caught the attention of Shelby County Sheriff's deputies who were watching the retail area, including Walmart.

They were caught before they even started.

"We were in the right place at the right time," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman Chip Washington.

Investigators said Cates was seen sitting in the backseat of a car in the Walmart parking lot, rolling Walmart bags in his pants.

"After he finished rolling them, he stuffed them into his pants," said Washington.  "Then he walked into the store."

Detectives saw Cates walk out of the store with a basket full of meat.  They watched Wilson get out of the car and help Cates put the meat in the car.

Detectives arrested Wilson.  Cates said he had a medical emergency due to a recent surgery.  He was taken by ambulance to the MED.

Wilson's wife was also in the car at Walmart.  She told deputies she had no idea of her husband and uncle's activities.  She was not charged.
