(WMC-TV) - A woman was stabbed to death inside of her East Memphis home Saturday morning.

Police were called to a home in the 5400 block of Gwynne just before 7 Saturday morning.  Inside, they found 55-year-old Elaine Walsh with multiple injuries to the head.

Walsh was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's 22-year-old son, William Patrick Walsh, has been charged with first degree murder in connection with his mother's death.

William Walsh told police he stabbed his mother after they argued over a loud noise he was making.  Police said his father was in bed during the argument.

At around 5:30 Saturday morning, William Walsh went into this father's bedroom and said he had done something terrible.  Kevin Walsh then found his wife dead on the living room sofa after she had been stabbed in the face and head.

Elaine Walsh is listed as an administrative associate and assistant to the dean at the University of Memphis' university college.  She also previously worked at WMC-TV.

"This is a big loss to our family, this news took my breath away," said Action News 5 anchor Joe Birch.  "Elaine Walsh was the newsroom secretary in the late 1970s and through the mid-80s."

Birch said he had nothing but fond memories of the woman he described as a treasure.

"She was the heart and soul of this place," he said.  "She was a smiling, warm, loving person who really loved her family and children and her husband Kevin, the attorney."

Elaine Walsh and her husband, Memphis lawyer Kevin Walsh, lived in the home on Gwynne Road.

Students on the University of Memphis campus were saddened by the loss of one of their own.

"On behalf of the Tigers and the University of Memphis faculty, students, and staff, my heart and prayers go out to her family," said student Sarah Noor.

Police have not released further details about the events leading up to Elaine Walsh's murder, but those who knew her said she will be missed.

"I know this family, it's a beautiful family, and this is a stunning event in the life of our city and for a great family," added Birch. "It's just such a tremendous loss."

University of Memphis President Shirley Raines released a statement Saturday saying, "The University extends its sympathy to the family, friends and co-workers of Elaine Walsh.  She was a valued employee for eight years.  We are deeply saddened by this tragedy."

William Walsh is due in court Monday morning.
