(WMC-TV) – Frayser church members are frustrated after their building was burglarized three times in about a month.
Memphis police believe the three burglaries were likely committed by the same person, but the church's pastor says he's willing to forgive the crook.
Rugby Hills Baptist is dealing with a dilemma familiar to other older churches. It has a large building, but a dwindling congregation, according to Bill Pierce, the church's pastor.
But a decreasing congregation isn't the church's only concern.
The church has been burglarized three times in about one month's time.
"I can remember a time when somebody probably wouldn't break into a church," said Pearce. "They might (break into) someone's house, but wouldn't break into a church"
During the most recent burglary, someone stole items from the minister of music's office after breaking in through a window.
The church now plans to use some of its limited resources to enhance the building's security system.
Though they can only pray the burglaries will end.
"We live in an impoverished area and I know people are hurting," said Pearce.
However, the pastor said he was more than willing to forgive the thief. He's not interested in retribution, only in stopping the burglaries.
